Thames Valley Hire Services recently acquired Portatools Ltd in Uxbridge, a well-established and popular hire and sales business with over 40 years’ experience. Due to the packing, storage and despatch facilities at the Uxbridge branch the company plans to base their new ecommerce business here later in 2009.
The original hire software system used by Thames Valley Hire Services from 1995 became increasingly incapable of supporting the business needs of a growing company – especially in the area of accounts integration. Stephen Storey (Managing Director) has reported that “the structure of Syrinx and the integration with Sage accounts is a major benefit of the system which works extremely well between the depots”.

Stephen commented that the main reason for moving over to Syrinx was because of the system’s reliability and user friendly operation. “Syrinx is excellent!” says Stephen. “Our previous system was unsatisfactory in comparison and its functionalities were poor compared with the Syrinx windows based system. Syrinx handles with total ease our hire and sales discounts; standard price lists for hire and sales stock, cross-hires and has automated invoice batch creation. Syrinx also allows us to keep a history of service and repair work against each fleet item. The additional features of outside customer servicing and CRM allow us to give an excellent level of customer care and attention.”
Staff have adapted brilliantly to Syrinx
He went on to add: “Training with our previous software was labour intensive and interfered with the general day to day running of the business. However, our staff have adapted brilliantly to Syrinx and its intuitive system guides you through all its functionalities, without someone having to look over your shoulder. Everyone gets on really well with it and there is an excellent support network at Higher Concept Software, although we have hardly needed to contact them, as the system is self-explanatory! ”

Stephen was impressed with the accountability across all areas of the business; especially in terms of stock utilisation, sales operations and finance and remarked “I wish we had acquired Syrinx from the very beginning. Over the next few years Thames Valley Hire Services plan to expand their company further. As Syrinx is built on a Microsoft SQL server database this will enable them to adapt their business needs with an easy and affordable upgrade solution path.
